How does Neoliner Origin contribute to cetacean protection?

Since entering service, Neoliner Origin has provided opportunities to observe several marine mammal species during its voyages across the North Atlantic. These encounters are a reminder of the practices implemented on board to help reduce the impact of maritime transport on cetaceans.

Reducing collision risks and underwater noise

Neoline focuses on two key areas. Slow steaming, which involves reducing engine-powered speed to 10–11 knots, in line with recommendations from the International Maritime Organization, helps reduce the risk of collisions with marine mammals.

Wind-powered propulsion also helps reduce reliance on engines and, consequently, underwater noise, which can disturb cetaceans.

Working with specialised organisations

Neoline also benefits from the guidance of organisations such as IFAW and Greenov to identify best practices for protecting marine mammals.

On board, the WhaleALERT app developed by IFAW helps raise passenger awareness of marine mammals and supports their identification.

Marine wildlife encounters along our routes

Recent voyages aboard Neoliner Origin have offered opportunities to encounter several marine mammal species. These observations highlight the rich biodiversity of the North Atlantic and the importance of continuing efforts to better integrate biodiversity protection into maritime practices.
